Janet’s place in the story

Janet Jackson originally played Dr. Patricia Agnew, the couple therapist married to architect Gavin Agnew (Malik Yoba), in the first two films in Tyler Perry’s franchise. The series began in 2007 and returned for a sequel in 2010; the third installment, Why Did I Get Married Again?, lands on Netflix Sept. 9 and reunites many of the original couples for a wedding celebration.

Scheduling, not scandal

Creator Tyler Perry made clear there was no ill will behind Jackson’s absence: scheduling conflicts kept her from participating. Perry said Jackson was committed to a Las Vegas residency during the period, which prevented a cameo. Malik Yoba also does not appear in the new film.
