This marks the second suit in five months. In December, new rules tied credentialing to publication of information "approved for public release by an appropriate authorizing official," and proposed NDAs and random polygraph tests for staff. First Amendment advocates protested, and in March a federal judge found the policy violated the First and Fifth Amendments.
The department also limited photographers at briefings about the Iran war and said only one uncredentialed representative per outlet may attend. Press secretary Kingsley Wilson noted photos are released online and suggested outlets apply for credentials. The National Press Photographers Association warned such limits hamstring a free press.
