Meticulous care and a secret blue

To protect the pure white fabric, embroiderers washed their hands every 30 minutes while working. Hidden in the hem of the dress was a small blue gingham fabric — from the dress Meghan wore on her first date — kept private for years.

Veil symbolism and the second dress

The veil bore hand-embroidered wildflowers representing all 53 Commonwealth countries, plus Wintersweet from palace grounds, the California Poppy and embroidered wheat for love and charity. For the evening reception she changed into a silk Stella McCartney gown with bare shoulders and an open back.

Public display and legacy

The dress was exhibited at Windsor Castle in "A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex," drawing record attendance, and was later named the most-searched bridal gown in the U.K. for the decade.
