A local medical examiner determined Cornell died by hanging. Toxicology reported multiple substances in his system, including Naloxone, Butalbital, several tablets of Lorazepam, pseudoephedrine and barbiturates. The family has said prescription medication, including Ativan, may have affected his judgment.
Cornell’s role in ’90s grunge with Soundgarden, plus work with Audioslave and Temple of the Dog, left a lasting mark: hits, Grammys and a posthumous Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in November 2025. Fellow artists and fans paid tribute, and his children and wife continue to honor his memory.
